Event Recap: One of Our Own, Ties The Knot!

Gregory Perrine, Creative Director at Jewell Events Catering, proposed to partner Michael Hall in the observatory of the John Hancock Center with the help of friends below. While looking through one of the observatory’s digital viewfinders, which have the ability to zoom in and zoom out. Gregory suggested to Michael that he look northeast toward Oak Street Beach where he could faintly see a group holding signs that spelled the question, “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” whereupon Gregory kneeled and presented Michael with a Star Trek-inspired Delta Shield ring.

The Wedding

The science fiction and comic-book-loving couple created one-of-a-kind invitations requesting guests join the two at their civil union to be held at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. The stone entry atrium set the scene of a couple’s ceremony, with a waterfall cascading in the background. With three of the four attendants being the couples close friends and women, “we called our wedding-party ladies our broomsmaids, with both of us being bridegrooms,” said Michael. “But Greg’s brother Jeff was still called a groomsman.” With their suits, Gregory and Michael each worse Chuck Taylor All Star high-tops with vinyl DC Comics’ The Flash and Batman prints, respectively.
The reception followed in the museum’s second-floor South Gallery, where guests enjoyed cocktail seating with lounge vignettes and a menu by the couple, including a “Taste of Chicago”-themed station for Gregory and a “Taste of Texas” one for Michael. In keeping with Southern tradition, the groom’s cake–a surprise from Gregory to Michael–was red velvet with a buttercream frosting. But there was a twist: the cake was shaped like the USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
